      Content: VITTORIO DE SILVA (1881-1954) Vittorio de Silva will be remembered as one of the most important Italian collectors of graphic arts of the 19th and 20th centuries. He was respected and well-known among collectors worldwide for his collections of stamps, picture postcards, posters, and above all of poster stamps. Vittorio was a scrupulous and systematic collector, and promoted the artistic and historical value of printed paper in part through his writing. He published many articles in specialist magazines and journals, considering everything printed to be an artwork and a testimony to the historical period in which he lived, from the 1860s until his death in 1954. His collection is made up of tiny icons, most of them extraordinarily beautiful, through which the viewer can read 100 years of world history. Wartime and peacetime events follow each other through a unique iconographic scheme, created by a brilliant mind. Within a limited space, page after page and stamp after stamp, advertising images alternate with commemorations and events, inviting the viewer to refer to other collections of posters, postcards and stamps that could not be hosted on a single website. There are images of the Universal Expositions of London, Antwerp, Torino, Paris; the first Olympic Games of the modern age and the great commercial exhibitions in Europe, Australia, America, Asia; the exploits of Garibaldi and his Thousand Men, the Spanish-American War in America, the colonial wars of the 1800s, the October Revolution in Russia, World War I, Mussolini and Hitler’s rise to power in Italy and Germany, World War II, political propaganda for the first democratic elections in Italy, and more. Over 120,000 tiny bits of paper are carefully aligned and arranged in chromatic sequences, all of superb graphic quality, designed and realised by the most important graphic technicians, illustrators, artists and experts of the time. A collection which is the fruit of the strongly international and cosmopolitan culture that Vittorio de Silva inherited from his historic family lineage. Vittorio was initiated into his passion for the graphic arts by the Genovese lithographer Michele Raffaele Nicolò Ademaro Armanino (1833-1906), son of Geronimo Armanino and Anna Odone, heir along with his brother to the lithographic workshop and later publishing house Editrice Armanino of Genova. It was from Armanino that Vittorio inherited the earliest nucleus of his collections, dating from the 1800s and consisting of postage stamps, poster stamps and postcards, as well as a wide knowledge of print techniques. Vittorio also enjoyed an affectionate relationship with Ademaro, who in his later years married Vittorio’s grandmother, Donna Josepha Maria del Carmen de Silva Portugal (1837-1906). Vittorio de Silva was secretary and president of the Associazione Erinnofila Italiana (Italian Poster Stamp Association), writing articles for the association’s journal and organising various exhibitions of postage and poster stamps. In 1952 in Rome, to celebrate the city’s candidature for the 1960 Olympic Games, and coinciding with the fiftieth anniversary of his collecting activities, Vittorio organised an exhibition of sport-themed stamps for which he received an award from the Italian National Olympic Committee. Short biographical note on Vittorio de Silva and descendants Vittorio Umberto Giulio Giuseppe de Silva Fernández de Ixar Portugal (1881-1954), a member of the European aristocracy, was born in Nice to Carlos Maria Isabel Fitz James Stuart (1849-1901), XVI Duke of Alba, and his cousin Donna Maria de Silva Fernández de Ixar Portugal (1861-1923), an actress, singer, and mime. The birth was recorded at the civil registry archives of Milan on 4 September 1881. The child was baptised in the church of the old Spanish community in Milan, San Tommaso in Terramara (Trastámara). Vittorio lived in the Lombard capital his whole life.   He married Donna Ambrogia Carlotta Cislaghi (1881-1969) and had five children: Bianca, Tino (Tino non è già un nomignolo?)
